Community Arts Foundation is an independent, non-profit 501(c)3 organization that provides need-based scholarships enabling children, teens, adults and seniors to participate in the wide range of visual and performing arts programs offered by Center for Community Arts.
The need for scholarships in this area is significant – 29% of Walnut Creek residents are low-income, living in hidden pockets of poverty. 11% of people in Contra Costa County live below the federal poverty level, 32% of them are children. Over 60% of Walnut Creek’s extremely low income households are senior citizens.
Since its founding in 2006, the Foundation (previously named Friends of Civic Arts Foundation) has provided over 1000 scholarships, plus grant funds to Center for Community Arts (previously Walnut Creek Civic Arts Education) to purchase equipment for art, drama, dance and music programs.
A dedicated elementary teacher wrote to the Foundation requesting a scholarship for Maria and George to attend arts classes. Both children are bilingual and receive special education services. According to their teacher, both are extremely talented and love to communicate through their art. When the mother was told her children would be receiving scholarships, she broke down and sobbed on the phone. She was so excited and thankful her children could participate in summer art classes.
Creative expression helps children communicate in different ways.
